HINTS ON CAMPAIGNING

What is campaigning?
Campaigning is the act of packing up camp and moving out on a moment’s notice,
not to return. In order to achieve this, one must pack very efficiently. It
is a balance between packing light enough that all of the soldiers kit can be
carried, yet packing heavy enough to maintain health and comfort. Motorized
units, such as 11Ko., were fortunate in being capable of stowing some of their
kit (Rucksacks & A-frames) and Kompanie equipment aboard the vehicles.
At present there have been few WWII campaign events, and none held by the TMHS.
So why learn about campaigning?
This is a new trend in the hobby and these types of events will become more
common. It is not mutually exclusive of the other things we enjoy, such as partaking
a bit of Schnapps or Bier, playing cards, busting caps or kicking butt in the
field. All of these things can be done without significantly impacting the other,
if only the attempt is made. There are benefits to trying this method of reenacting,
such as:
Saves time, much less packing and unpacking
Cheaper, much less camp equipment to purchase
More mobility
More authentic
And, less to lose, misplace or tear up
I know this is not for everybody, but give it a try. You never know, you might
like it. Try and look at it as a challenge to be overcome, it can be very satisfying
when viewed from this perspective.
Hints on Campaigning:
Equipment: bring all you basic kit; belt, Y-straps, ammo pouches, canteen, breadbag,
spade, gas mask cannister, mess kit & utensils, zeltbahn, rifle cleaning kit,
weapon, flashlight, and A-frame or rucksack. You will need few other items,
but will learn by experience what is actually used and those items that stay
in the rucksack all weekend. For NCO’s there are a few other items including
binoculars, compass, map case and whistle.
Uniform: you should choose one uniform for the weekend and stick to it. It is
not really that hard, check the forecast and make a decision. Also decide if
you will need gloves, toque or scarf. Better to be a little warm during the
day rather than freezing at night.
Food: pack the basics, enough for the weekend, no more. Avoid the modern snacks
and go with the period German stuff, it is very filling and does not require
much space.
Drink: pack your beverages in your rucksack inside a sock to avoid breakage
(wine & liqour). If you have a food container for Bier or period wire bale bottles
of gatorade, etc., it can be carried on the truck in the event of a different
camp site the following night.
Camp Equipment: East German food containers, tables, stools, lanterns and miscellaneous
equipment can used to liven up the camp and transported on the trucks when on
the move. In addition, this equipment can remain stored on the trucks to reduce
the amount each individual needs to bring to an event. However, this equipment
should be kept to a minimum, as the ultimate plan for the trucks is for shelter
during poor weather conditions. Outfitted with bows and tarps, there will be
substantial area other than tentage for remaining dry. According to Hans (Wiking
Vet), this was the favored way of staying dry in a downpour.
Staying Warm: in cool weather bring two wool blankets and buddy-up. Making a
nest of straw, pine needles or grass helps. In dry weather, put your zelts over
the cushion and lay on them. By pairing up you will have 4 blankets to put over
yourselves. It is very important that you have good think blankets, ADF’s blankets
and British Army blankets are inexpensive and very warm. Overcoats can be used
in lieu of a blanket. In wet weather set up a zelt tent or seek shelter in the
trucks.
Foot Care: always have two pairs of socks on hand, wet socks will blister your
feet. Moleskin is always handy to have one hand and will prevent blisters if
you feel a hot spot start.
Camp Towels: these are invaluable for cleaning up after a long day and will
make your nights rest far more comfortable. A spare shirt and a well prepared
bedding also goes a long way towards a good nights sleep.
