Gas Mask Canisters
Gas mask canisters are a little easier to spot than the mess kits. I will introduce you to what is and what is not acceptable, then you will be an expert on the subject.
First off, let me show you an original gas mask canister. There are 2 variations of useable cans, a short and long model. The short model is exactly like the tall model, only shorter! (Imagine that). Both acceptable types have a spring loaded latch- that is the important part here. Most reenactors are using the original cans, as there are not too many alternatives. There is a post war West German can that is covered in canvas that is identical to the wartime can, except that you have to remove the canvas and refinish the can. The main thing to remember is to look for the spring loaded latch. I will show you the most common can seen that is wrong.
On the left is an original WW2 German gas mask can. So if it's original, why is it wrong? This is the civil police model for non-combat personnel. Notice it has a hook type latch- incorrect for WW2 reenacting. The pre war gas mask cans are also in this configuration, with the hook type latch. Spanish gas mask cans are often sold as "WW2 type", and look like the can at left also. Remember, if it doesn't have a spring latch, it won't work!
As a final note on the subject, I am throwing in the photo at right. This is an original can that has the spring latch (albeit missing the web pull tab) that would be totally correct- the reason I throw this photo in is it shows what goes IN the can- a gas mask! I know that sounds silly, but I have had the occasion to use mine in the field during smoke grenade sessions. I suggest using a post war filter, as the carbon material in original filters is usually coming apart and can be inhaled- not a good thing. Mask are available separately from different vendors, and will complete your kit. I do not suggest carrying the can empty, as it will sound like you have a cowbell on when running!
